Floral Designer

Hi, I'm Emmaline.

I'm a floral designer and recent horticulture graduate who loves creating beautiful things, solving interesting problems, and working with my hands.

I first found floral design while working in the floral department at Safeway. I loved horticulture, but flowers offered a creative outlet I hadn't found anywhere else in the field. There's also something special about working with something that can immediately brighten someone's day. Whether they're celebrating a wedding, marking an important moment, or just receiving flowers for no particular reason, flowers make people happy and I love getting to be a part of that!

Why Floral Design?

For me, floral design is equal parts creativity and problem-solving. Sometimes the challenge is artistic: finding the right combination of flowers, greenery, texture, color, and movement. Other times it's figuring out the mechanics of an installation, working within a budget, or finding a way to make an idea work within the space available.

And then I get to make it all with flowers. That's a pretty great medium to work in.

My own designs tend to lean toward a more naturalistic style, but I enjoy experimenting with different aesthetics and learning how other designers approach their work. I'm especially interested in discovering how different flowers and greens work together and picking up the little techniques that can take a design from good to something special.

My Favorite Projects

Give me a big installation and I'm happy.

I especially enjoy the larger, non-wearable pieces involved in weddings and events. Arches, mantels, statement pieces, and other installations combine so many of the things I enjoy about floral design: mechanics, scale, creativity, and the challenge of turning an idea into something real.

There's something incredibly satisfying about stepping back at the end and seeing the finished piece in the space it was designed for.

When I'm Not Playing With Flowers...

I'm a bit of a nerd.

I love movies, board games, video games, D&D and other role-playing games, and spending time with friends. I enjoy stories in pretty much any form, whether I'm experiencing someone else's or getting to help create one.

I'm also usually making something. Crochet is my favorite fiber art, and lately I've been exploring drawing and other artistic mediums. I like learning new creative skills, even when I'm not particularly good at them yet.

And since everyone eventually asks a floral designer:

My favorite flower is the dahlia.
